Celebrate Your Sexual Freedom!

The United States may be the land of the free, but we still have so much progress to make when it comes to our sexual freedom.

Luckily, Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit is an organization that hosts a conference each year to gather leaders in the sex education industry to share and learn how we can have better access to sexual freedom. This year the conference is August 14-17th in Alexandria, VA.

SFS_FB_FeministaJones-920x300The people who attend Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit are dedicated to advancing our sexual freedoms, whether it be the freedom to buy sex toys, have access to comprehensive sex education or be seen as a sexually whole person.

[Woodhull is] the one conference focused on sexual freedom as a fundamental human right in the US. Now in its 5th year, and with four days of institutes, workshops, plenaries, and social events. The focus of the Summit is the goal of the sexual freedom movement – global recognition of our fundamental human right to sexual freedom.

janet-hardyWoodhull boasts an impressive list of speakers, including Feminista Jones, Fatha Jazz Bardeaux, Kate D’Adamo, Janet Hardy, Charlie Glickman and so many more inspiring educators, speakers and performers. Check out the full speaker list here.

Sexual freedom is important for many reasons, and it means something different for everyone! For some people, sexual freedom might mean being able to identify and live life as asexual, without experiencing shame or judgement from others. Sexual freedom might mean living outside of traditional relationship styles without being discriminated against by your family, friends or co-workers.

Some of the planned discussion topics at Woodhull are:

  • the denial and importance of our identities
  • relationships and families
  • gender expression& identity
  • sex-work & sex-workers’ rights
  • the undermining of our healthcare
  • reduction of our access to sexuality education
  • the criminalization of our sexual expression and pleasure
  • what pleasure looks like
  • human rights
  • BUT we’ll also be talking about how to create the change we want to see in these and other areas.

There are many ways you can express and fight for your sexual freedom. If you’re able to attend Woodhull, you’ll get plenty of ideas there. If you aren’t able to attend, think about networking in your community to create and promote sexual freedom. You could take a class, host a sex positive lecture or event, talk to you friends about the diversity of identities or masturbate everyday! These are all ways you can support sexual freedom for yourself and in your community.
